As the school year gets underway, please take a few minutes to review safe travel habits with your child. Whether students walk, bike, or ride the school bus, simple routines can help everyone get to and from school safely.

Biking Safely

  • Wear a properly fitted helmet every ride.

  • Ride in the same direction as traffic.

  • Obey traffic signs and signals.

  • Stay alert and avoid distractions.

New Jersey law requires bicycle riders under age 17 to wear a helmet.

Walking Safely

  • Use sidewalks whenever available.

  • Cross at crosswalks and intersections with traffic lights whenever possible.

  • Follow crossing guards and pedestrian signals.

  • Review a direct, familiar route to and from school with your child.

School Bus Safety

  • Wait safely away from the roadway and approach only after the bus has stopped completely.

  • Buckle your seat belt and remain seated and buckled for the ride.

  • Follow the bus driver's directions and avoid distracting behavior.

  • If crossing near the bus, cross in front where the driver can see you—never behind the bus.

MTPS requires students to buckle upon boarding and remain seated and buckled until the bus reaches its destination. NJ school-bus guidance also directs students to remain visible to the driver and never cross behind the bus.

School administrators and School Resource Officers will continue reinforcing safe travel practices with students. Families with questions about a specific walking or biking route are encouraged to contact their child's school for additional guidance.

Additional transportation information and district bus safety expectations are available through the MTPS Transportation Department.

Thank you for helping our students travel safely to school and home each day.
