A disagreement between classmates, something concerning in a group chat, or a friend who may need support. Students don’t always know what to do in these situations, but they should know they don’t have to handle them alone.
October 19–23 is School Violence Awareness Week in New Jersey. At Monroe Township Public Schools, it’s an opportunity to reinforce the importance of looking out for one another, resolving disagreements peacefully, and knowing when to ask for help.
One simple way families can take part is by asking their children: “If something at school, on the bus, or online worries you or a friend, who would you talk to?”
It might be a teacher, counselor, coach, or another trusted adult. Having that conversation at home can help children feel more comfortable reaching out when they need support.
Families are also encouraged to contact their child’s school whenever a concern arises. Sharing information early gives school staff an opportunity to listen, offer guidance, and help address situations before they become more serious.
